Office of Government Relations collaborations and position statements

The AMS Office of Government Relations (OGR) works with various coalitions in Washington, D.C. to promote the work of mathematicians and to advocate on issues of concern to the mathematical community.

The Coalition for National Science Funding is an alliance of more than 130 professional organizations, universities and business supporting the goal of increased and stable investments in National Science Foundation research and education programs.

The Task Force on American Innovation is an alliance of industry, scientific societies and university organizations committed to scientific research that benefits America's economy, security and quality of life.

The STEM Education Coalition raises awareness about the critical role that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education plays in enabling the U.S. to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace.

We are also members of the Government Affairs Task Force (on ensuring high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly communication) and the Coalition for National Security Research (a leading voice for defense-oriented science and technology); a CountOnStats partner and a contributor and sponsor of the Golden Goose Awards.

Position statements to policymakers

On occasion, the AMS Council or Board of Trustees adopt position statements that relate to the understanding and use of mathematics relevant to public policy or to federal policies that impact the livelihood of the mathematics community.

AMS also occasionally writes position papers describing our priorities on policies of current interest to the administration or Congress. These are often written to distribute at meetings with relevant Hill staff.
