The 2024 Mathematical Art Exhibition

The JMM 2024 Mathematical Art Exhibition was held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco, CA from January 3 - 6, 2024. This annual exhibition, curated by Robert Fathauer and Bruce Torrence, was established in 2008 through an endowment provided to the American Mathematical Society by an anonymous donor who wishes to acknowledge those whose works demonstrate the beauty and elegance of mathematics expressed in a visual art form. Participants in the exhibition submit their photographs, paintings, prints, sculptures, digital art, and more, all inspired by mathematical concepts, principles, or structures. The artwork often reflects mathematical patterns, symmetries, fractals, geometric shapes, or abstract mathematical ideas. 

Below are the recipients of the JMM 2024 Mathematical Art Exhibition awards "for aesthetically pleasing works that combine mathematics and art." Their works, along with the works of nine other artists, will be included in the 2025 Calendar of Mathematical Imagery, printed and distributed by the AMS.

JMM 2024 Mathematical Art Exhibition: Best Photograph, Painting, or Print

- Henry Segerman is an associate professor in the department of mathematics at Oklahoma State University. His research interests are in three-dimensional geometry and topology, and in mathematical art and visualization. He wrote the book "Visualizing Mathematics with 3D Printing."
- Saul Schleimer is a geometric topologist working at the University of Warwick {UK}. His other interests include combinatorial group theory and computation. He is especially interested in the interplay between these fields and additionally in visualisation of ideas from these fields.
- Will Segerman is a self-employed sculptor in analogue and digital media. He works from his home/office/workshop in Manchester, UK. His current main source of income is as an escape room puzzle designer.

"My artistic passions are purely mathematical images and sculptures, which express a certain vision of forms and shapes, my interpretations of distance, transformations and space. In my opinion, mathematics is a way of thinking, a way of life. My images and sculptures are like photographs of interesting mathematical ideas, which I discover and bring to the real world. I have always been intrigued by the possibility of showing the intrinsic richness of the mathematical world, whose charm and harmony can really be appreciated by everyone."  - Vladimir Bulatov

"There are two things I have done for as long as I can remember: explore mathematics, and create things with my hands. In my professional academic life, these impulses have merged into my specialization in mathematics and the arts. I am particularly devoted to exploring handcrafts, especially those in the fiber arts traditionally viewed as feminine. The interplay between mathematics and fiber arts is endlessly fascinating, both in the ways that mathematics allows for a deeper understanding of knitting, crochet, weaving, and so forth, and in the ways that these crafts can illuminate complex concepts in mathematics." - Susan Goldstine
