Graduate Student Travel Grants
Meetings are an important part of any young mathematical scientist's professional development. Listening to talks, meeting active researchers, connecting with old friends, learning about professional issues and resources, and making new professional connections are building blocks of the early career.
The AMS, with support from a private gift, accepts applications for partial support for two types of AMS meetings:
The Joint Mathematics Meetings
Upcoming JMM: January 15 - 18, 2014, Baltimore, Maryland. Applications will be accepted during the period August 23, 2013 through September 26th, 2013. This program supports ONLY selected doctoral students in mathematics who are in their last year of study (that is, have not received the PhD before the application deadline, but do expect to receive the PhD degree within the twelve month period following the application deadline). The submission deadline will be September 26, 2013, 11:59pm Eastern time.
AMS Sectional Meetings
Current Sectional meetings: Fall 2013 (October 5-6, 2013, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY; October 12-13, 2013, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; October 18-20, 2013, Washington University, St. Louis, MO; November 2-3, 2013, University of California Riverside, Riverside, CA). Applications for any one of these four sectional meetings will be accepted and considered as a group. This program accepts applications from current full time doctoral students. The DEADLINE for this program is July 18, 2013. Applications are now being accepted, here.
Upcoming Sectional Meetings: Spring 2014 (March 21-23, 2014, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Knoxville, TN; March 29-30, 2014, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD; April 5-6, 2014, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM; April 11-13, 2014, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX) Applications for any one of these four sectional meetings will be accepted and considered as a group. This program accepts applications from current full time doctoral students. The application period for this program begins on September 2, 2013, 11:59pm Eastern time. The DEADLINE for this program is November 14, 2013.
Conditions of awards:
Each program supports only selected doctoral students in mathematics. For the JMM grants, applications are accepted from those in their last year of study only (that is, have not received the PhD before the application deadline, but do expect to receive the PhD degree within the twelve month period following the application deadline). For the Sectional meeting grants, full time doctoral students may apply.
The current institution of the applicant MUST be more than 50 miles from the site of the meeting per google maps.
A representative of the university must submit a statement verifying the expected date of graduation. Each awardee's university is strongly encouraged, but not required, to provide matching support.
Support level for the January JMM is $500. Support level for sectional meetings is $250.
Support is only available after the meeting when proof of attendance can be provided. In no case will support exceed the amounts stated here.
Each application cycle is a selective process and applicants may or may not receive an award.
All information about the Joint Mathematics Meetings and AMS Sectional Meetings can be found in the Meetings section of the AMS website. Please take note of deadlines for papers; travel grant applicants or awardees are completely responsible to make their own travel and meeting arrangements.
