Producing Your Book

Information for preparation of accepted books and articles

Complete information about the preparation of manuscripts for monographs and articles for proceedings volumes is available from the AMS.  Authors of articles for conference proceedings normally receive this information automatically.  If you have not received any such information, please contact the Acquisitions Department .

AMS Author Handbook

  • Designed to help you prepare your book or article for publication or copublication by the AMS; contains information about all facets of the AMS publication process.

Author Packages

  • The AMS strongly encourages you to use the appropriate author package to prepare your article or monograph.
  • Author packages for AMS book series are available in LaTeX and AMS-TeX.  Author packages containing samples, templates, instructions, and style files are available bundled into a .zip file. If you are unable to use a .zip file, be sure to retrieve every file for the selected author package.

AMS Editor's Package

  • Editors of Collections or Proceedings volumes: Use this package to help prepare front and end matter in a standard format and deliver the material to the AMS.

Graphics Guidelines

  • The Graphics Guidelines provide detailed instructions for creating and preparing graphics for inclusion in a book or article. Following these guidelines will help your projects move quickly through production.
  •  Color Policy
    •  Monographs When a monograph includes color graphics, figures should have a resolution of at least 300 pixels per inch when printed at 100%. Ideally, they should be in EPS format; TIFF and JPEG are also acceptable. Note that PostScript is not the same as Encapsulated PostScript; the latter is a subset of the former.
    • Collections and Proceedings The AMS normally does not include color graphics in its proceedings and collection volumes, except in special circumstances. When the Managing Editor and Publisher mutually agree that color graphics are warranted, figures should have a resolution of at least 300 pixels per inch when printed at 100%. Ideally, they should be in EPS format; TIFF and JPEG are also acceptable. Note that PostScript is not the same as Encapsulated PostScript; the latter is a subset of the former.

Consent to Publish and Copyright Agreement

  • After an article is accepted for publication, the AMS will send out a Consent to Publish Form to all authors of the article. All authors submitting papers to any proceedings volume must give the AMS specific permission to publish the work ("consent to publish") by returning a signed consent form.

Permissions

  • Permission to Use AMS Material: To use material published by the AMS, please submit a request.
  • Permission to Use Non-AMS Material:   You must obtain written permission for the use of material, including text, graphics, photos, tables, and other art, that comes from any other source.  As soon as your manuscript is accepted for publication, request permissions  using the AMS permission form. Send a copy of the letter(s) granting permission to the AMS with your submission.
