Mathematical Reviews Policy on Indexing Electronic Journals

Enter search criteria

Initially the cursor is in the blank text input box under Journal.    Enter your search criteria (a journal abbreviation, journal name, partial name, or an ISSN). Following are some guidelines to keep in mind when searching for a journal in MathSciNet:

  • MathSciNet searches are not case-sensitive.
  • When entering a journal abbreviation as search criterion, it is not usually necessary to enter the exact MR journal abbreviation. Many reasonable abbreviations will work. For example, each of the following search strings will return a list of headlines that includes Israel Journal of Mathematics: isr j math, israel jour math, israel jour of math, israel journal of math, israel.
  • An ISSN can be entered with a hyphen, a space, or no space. For example, all of the following are acceptable: 0002-9920, 0002 9920, 00029920.
  • The wildcard character is the asterisk (*) and may be used anywhere within the journal string to broaden the search. It may not be used at the start of a "word".

Journal database search results

The initial search results that are displayed provide a list of journals that match the search criteria. Some journals will be listed as Indexed cover-to-cover or Historical. If a journal is listed as Indexed cover-to-cover, then all papers in each issue are likely to be indexed in the Mathematical Review Database. If a journal is listed as Historical, then the journal has ceased publication, has been continued under a new title, series or publisher, or for editorial reasons is no longer indexed by the Mathematical Reviews Database.

To view bibliographic information for any of the journals listed, click on the linked journal name.

Journal bibliographic information

The bibliographic information for a journal includes publisher name and address, ISSN, CODEN (if available), frequency of publication, and a link to the journal's Web site, if available. If journal issues are archived electronically at more than one site, there may be several Web sites listed.

For those using RSS feeds for current awareness, RSS 1.0 and RSS 2.0 links are provided on the journal bibliographic information page.

At the bottom of the bibliographic information page will be a List issues for this journal link. Click on this to retrieve the listing. Each issue number will be a hyperlink. Click on one of these issue links to display a headline list of bibliographic data. If the journal uses consecutive page numbering in its issues, the headline list will be in order of first page numbers, as in a table of contents. From the headline list, full items can be selected for display.

Note: Issue information is not available in the Journals Database for journal issues prior to 1985. To search for journal issues prior to 1985 you may use the Journal field of Publication Search together with publication year and perhaps volume and issue numbers (in the Anywhere field) as a partial solution.

If items are not listed for an issue, either no items were selected for indexing, or the items to be indexed have not yet been loaded into the MR Database.

Activate the search

Once all desired search criteria have been entered, click on the Search button. Search results are displayed as a headline list of bibliographic data that matches the search criteria. From this screen, full items can be selected for display. If a search results in a single item, the corresponding full item is returned, rather than a headline.
