This short piece is a profile of University of Michigan mathematician Fred L.Bookstein, who has developed statistical theory of shape, dubbed"morphometrics." This theory is being used to identify differences in theshapes of the brains of schizophrenics. It may also have applications toearthquake and weather prediction, diagnosing fetal alcohol syndrome, andimproving golf swings.
