"The Short List: Pressing Issues in Academe." The Chronicle of Higher Education, 19 September 2003, pages B4-B6.
The article contains professors' opinions about pressing issues in their respective disciplines. The pressing issue for Greg Frederickson, a professor of computer science at Purdue, is "how to deal with our society's failure to appreciate mathematics." Frederickson writes that proofs result in good code, but many software designers still resist mathematical rigor. He concludes with, "Those who are more enthusiastic about mathematics recognize that formal methods enable the creation of code that is elegant and correct. Such people are too rare in a culture that does not wholeheartedly embrace mathematics. Too often do I hear the phrase `mathematical recreations' characterized as an oxymoron."
