The Abel Prize, given for the first time in 2003, recognizes achievement inmathematics research and carries a prize purse of US$816,000. The hope is thatthe Abel Prize, which was established by the government of Norway, willeventually be viewed as on a par with the Nobel Prizes. There is no NobelPrize in mathematics; the Fields Medal is usually considered to be the topaward in the field. The 2003 Abel Prize was awarded to Jean-Pierre Serre.
