Short Summaries of Articles about Mathematics

"How Math Put It All in Perspective," by Roderick Conway Morris. International Herald Tribune, December 15-16, 2001.
"If Renaissance Italians had not been so preoccupied with mathematics, the history of Western art might have been very different." So begins this article, which briefly describes the history of the development of the technique of perspective drawing. The occasion for the article is an exhibit entitled "In the Footsteps of Masaccio: The Invention of Perspective," which was at the Uffizi museum in Florence until January 20, 2002. The exhibit included many devices that helped artists render 3-dimensional scenes in 2-dimensional perspective. The techniques artists developed also had an influence on terrestrial and celestial mapmaking.
