Review of The Science of Conjecture: Evidence and Probability before Pascal, by James Franklin. Reviewed by Jane Hawkins. Science, 19 October 2001, page 528.
Franklin is a mathematician and philosopher at the University of South Wales in Australia who has written this book about how scholars throughout history have dealt with the lack of certainty in an unpredictable world. This is a book for those interested in how disciplines other than probability theory deal with uncertainty and in how those disciplines have influenced probability theory. What is meant by proof in areas outside of mathematics---for example, in law---is also discussed in the book.
