"Fuzzy Math", by William Thurston. Letter to the Editor, New YorkTimes, 6 October 2000, page A30.
In the first debate of the 2000 presidential election, George Bush derided someof Al Gore's proposals as "fuzzy math". Thurston writes that, as amathematician, he was interested in this and chagrined when Bush did notexplain exactly what he meant. "I gradually came to understand that by `fuzzymath' Mr. Bush meant, `Math is confusing and fuzzy, so ignore it.'," Thurstonwrites. "This is dismaying to see in a man who says he will be a leader ofeducational reform."
