TA Development Using Case Studies: A Workshop for Faculty
Organized by Diane Herrmann
Diane Herrmann, University of Chicago, will guide workshop participants
in the effective use of the case studies method as a tool in preparing
Teaching Assistants for their important role as classroom instructors.
The faculty edition of the publication Teaching Mathematics in Colleges
and Universities: Case Studies for Today's Classroom, from the CBMS
series Issues in Mathematics Education, will be provided to workshop participants
at no charge, compliments of the AMS. For further information on this
book, visit the AMS Bookstore
and enter "CBMATH/10.F" in the Quick Search window.
The workshop will be held Saturday, October 23, in two sessions,
9:30 am -11:00 am and 1:00 pm -2:00 pm.
Travel support awards of \$200 per department are available for up to
ten departments. Travel support is provided by the Calculus Consortium
for Higher Education, and to be eligible for this support, faculty representatives
must have their department chair send a letter to the AMS stating the
department's serious intent to use the case studies materials in their
TA training or development program. The letter may be sent to Dr. James

The registration desk will be open 7:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday
and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday in the Lobby, Technological Institute.
Registration fees: (payable on site only) \$40/AMS members; \$60/nonmembers;
\$5/emeritus members, students, or unemployed mathematicians. Fees are

By Air: Evanston is served by both Chicago's O'Hare International
Airport and Midway Airport.

Airport Shuttle from O'Hare: Continental Airport Express offers
daily shuttle service from O'Hare International Airport between downtown
Chicago and north suburban locations from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Departures
are about every 5 to 10 minutes. The fare to Evanston is approximately
\$20 for a standard passenger or \$17 for students. You can reserve a seat
in advance by calling 312-454-7799, or you can make your reservation at
the Continental Air Transport ticket counter after you have collected
your baggage.
Subway (the "L") from O'Hare: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA/elevated/"L")
train provides rapid transit service from O'Hare to downtown and from
downtown to Evanston.
1. Take the CTA Blue Line train from the O'Hare station to Washington
Street in Chicago's Loop.
2. Get off at Washington Street and walk through the pedestrian tunnel
to the Washington Street stop on the Red Line. Take the Red Line north
to Howard Street.
3. Howard Street is as far as the Red Line goes in the direction of Evanston,
so you will need to get off the Red Line train and transfer to a Purple
Line train. Take the Purple Line north to the Foster Street stop in Evanston.
4. Walk east, passing Sherman Avenue and Orrington Avenue (about two
and a half blocks), until you arrive at Sheridan Road. Refer to the campus
maps at http://www.northwestern.edu/campus/maps/evanston_campus_map.html
to find specific locations.
Taxi to Evanston Campus from O'Hare: Taxis are available on a
first-come, first-served basis from the lower-level curb front of all
terminals. Shared ride service is available. Expect to spend approximately
\$35 to \$40 for a taxi to Evanston.
Airport Shuttle from Midway: To take the Airport Shuttle from
Midway, you MUST make reservations one day in advance by calling 312-454-7799.
Check in with the Continental Air Transport ticket agent located near
the baggage claim area. Continental Airport Express offers daily shuttle
service between Midway and north suburban locations from 6:00 a.m. to
11:30 p.m. Departures are about every 15 minutes. The fare to the Evanston
campus is about \$28. The pickup location is located in front of the main
terminal building.
Subway (the "L") from Midway: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA/elevated/"L")
train provides transit service to downtown. There is an "L" stop at the
airport.
1. Take the CTA Orange Line to the State/Lake stop in Chicago's Loop.
You will be on the elevated level above State Street and Lake Street at
that location.
2. Walk down the stairs to State Street.
3. Walk about a half block south and take the stairs down from State
Street to the subway station. Take the Red Line north to Howard Street.
4. Howard Street is as far as the Red Line goes in the direction of Evanston,
so you will need to get off the Red Line train and transfer to a Purple
Line train. Take the Purple Line north to the Foster Street stop in Evanston.

Driving: From O'Hare International Airport:
1. Take the main exit road from the airport, which turns into I-190,
east for about a half mile.
2. Exit right and go north on I-294, the Tri-State Tollway. You will
be headed north toward Wisconsin, and shortly after entering you will
need to pay a 50¢ toll.
3. Go north about three miles to the Dempster Street eastbound exit.
4. Take Dempster Street east approximately 10 miles through Park Ridge,
Niles, Morton Grove, and Skokie into Evanston.
5. At Chicago Avenue in Evanston, turn left and go north.
6. Main campus is approximately three-fourths of a mile north at Chicago
Avenue and Sheridan Road.
From Midway Airport:
1. From Midway take Cicero Avenue north to I-55 (the Stevenson Expressway).
2. Turn right (northeast) on I-55 toward downtown Chicago.
3. Follow I-55 to Lake Shore Drive northbound.
4. Take Lake Shore Drive north through downtown Chicago and continue
until Lake Shore Drive ends. Lake Shore Drive splits; you will need to
be in one of the right two lanes to turn north on Sheridan Road.
5. Turn right and continue north on Sheridan Road through Chicago into
Evanston.
6. Follow Sheridan Road north, which makes several right-hand turns to
keep going north, until you reach the Northwestern campus. Refer to the
campus maps to find specific locations.
To Evanston from the /north, via I-94: (Note: Highway is called
I-94 East, but runs north-south in Chicago metropolitan area.)
1. Take I-94 East south to Skokie Highway.
2. Go south on Skokie Highway approximately 2 miles to Golf Road.
3. Turn left (east) at Golf Road.
4. Follow Golf Road approximately 4 miles east into Evanston (the road
name changes to Emerson Street in Evanston).
5. Just past Maple Street in Evanston is a fork in the road; bear to
the right to go onto Clark Street.
6. Follow Clark Street through downtown Evanston. You'll know you're
going the correct way when you note some landmarks:
* The Rebecca Crown Center, which houses the offices of the Central Administration
of Northwestern, on the north side of Clark Street (to your left).
* A Burger King restaurant on the south side of Clark Street (to your
right).
7. The main campus is located at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Sheridan
Road.
To Evanston from the West or Southwest, via I-55 or I-80 to I-94 West:
(Note: Highway is called I-94 West, but runs north-south in Chicago metro
area.)
1. If coming in on eastbound I-80, follow I-80 until the interchange
with I-55; take northbound I-55.
2. Follow northbound I-55 until the interchange withI-90/I-94; take northbound
I-90/I-94 (Kennedy Expressway).
3. When I-94 splits from I-90, bear to the right, staying on I-94 W (Edens
Expressway).
4. Take I-94 W north to Dempster Street east.
5. Follow Dempster Street east approximately 5 miles through the suburbs
of Skokie and Evanston.
6. At Chicago Avenue in Evanston, turn left and go north.
7. Main campus is approximately three-fourths of a mile north at Chicago
Avenue and Sheridan Road.
To Evanston from the West or Northwest, via I-88, I-90, or I-190:
(Note: These directions also apply if traveling from O'Hare International
Airport.)
1. Take I-88, I-90, or I-190 eastbound until you reach northbound I-294
(heading toward Wisconsin).
2. Take I-294 north to Dempster Street east.
3. Follow Dempster Street approximately 10 miles through the suburbs
of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Niles, Morton Grove, Skokie, and Evanston.
4. At Chicago Avenue in Evanston, turn left and go north.
5. Main campus is approximately three-fourths of a mile north at Chicago
Avenue and Sheridan Road.
To Evanston from the South or Southeast, via I-94, I-90, I-80, or
I-57:
Once you reach the Chicago area, you want to go north on I-94 West (Note:
Highway is called I-94 West, but runs north-south in Chicago metro area.)
If you are coming from:
I-80/I-94: I-94 splits from I-80 south of Chicago and heads north.
I-57: I-57 ends at and merges into I-94 on the south side of
Chicago.
I-90: I-90 merges with I-94 on the south side of Chicago.
Once you are northbound on I-94 W:
1. When I-94 splits from I-90, bear to the right, staying on I-94 (Edens
Expressway).
2. Take I-94 W north to Dempster Street east.
3. Follow Dempster Street approximately 5 miles through the suburbs of
Skokie and Evanston.
4. At Chicago Avenue in Evanston, turn left and go north.
5. Main campus is approximately three-fourths of a mile north at Chicago
Avenue and Sheridan Road.
