Other Activities

TA Development Using Case Studies: A Workshop for Faculty
Organized by Solomon Friedberg

Solomon Friedberg, Boston College, will guide workshop participants in the effective use of the case studies method as a tool in preparing Teaching Assistant for their important role as classroom instructors. The faculty edition of the publication Teaching Mathematics in Colleges and Universities: Case Studies for Today's Classroom, from the CBMS series Issues in Mathematics Education, will be provided to workshop participants at no charge, compliments of the AMS. For a recent review of the book, visit MAA Online http://www.maa.org/reviews/casestudies.html. The workshop will be held on Sunday, April 4.

Travel support awards of $200 per department are available for up to ten departments. Travel support is provided by the Calculus Consortium for Higher Education, and to be eligible for this support, faculty representatives must have their department chair send a letter to the AMS stating the department's serious intent to use the case studies materials in their TA training or development program.

Book Sales: Examine the newest titles from the AMS! Complimentary coffee will be served courtesy of AMS Membership Services. The book exhibit will be located in the second floor lobby, Morton Hall.

AMS Editorial Activity: An acquisitions editor from the AMS book program will be present to speak with prospective authors. If you have a book project that you would like to discuss with the AMS, please stop by the book exhibit.

Registration and Meeting Information

The registration desk will be located in the lobby and courtyard of the Mark Taper Hall of Humanities (THH). The desk will be open on Saturday, April 3 from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.; and Sunday, April 4, from 8:00 a.m. until noon.. Fees are $40 for AMS or CMS members, $60 for nonmembers, and $5 for students/unemployed/emeritus, payable on site by cash, check, or credit card. All talks will take place in the Mark Taper Hall of Humanities (THH).

Transportation

The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located approximately 15 miles from campus (approximately 25 minutes by car) and is served by all major airlines. For more information visit http://www.los-angeles-lax.com.

Driving Directions to USC Campus

Located next to one of the city's major cultural centers, Exposition Park, the 155-acre University Park Campus is just minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is easily accessible by major freeways.

From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Take 105 (Century Freeway) East. Transition to 110 (Harbor Freeway) North. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit. Go straight through the 37th Street light. Keep left. Go under the freeway bridge and across Flower Street and Figueroa Street. Turn right into the entrance to the university (Gate 3) at Figueroa Street and 35th Street.

110 (Harbor Freeway) North

405 (San Diego Freeway) South or North

Transition to 10 (Santa Monica Freeway) East heading toward Los Angeles. Take the Hoover Street exit. Turn right at the light. Continue until Hoover Street ends at Jefferson Boulevard. Turn left on Jefferson Boulevard for Gate 3 or turn right on Jefferson Blvd. for Gate 5.

101 (Hollywood/Ventura Freeway) South or North

Transition to 110 (Harbor Freeway) South. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit. Go across Flower Street and Figueroa Street. Turn right into the entrance to the university (Gate 3) at Figueroa Street and 35th Street.

5 (Golden State/Santa Ana Freeway) South or North

Transition to 10 West (Santa Monica Freeway) and then to 110 South (Harbor Freeway).

Note: An alternate route if you are north of downtown and driving south on 5: Exit directly to 110 South and take it through the downtown area to Exposition Boulevard, which is just south of downtown.

Take the Exposition Boulevard exit. Go across Flower Street and Figueroa Street. Turn right into the entrance to the university (Gate 3) at Figueroa Street and 35th Street.

Car Rental: Special rates have been negotiated with Avis Rent A Car for the period March 27­April 11, 2004, beginning at $29.99/day for a subcompact car at the weekend rate (the weekend rate is available from noon Thursday until Monday at 11:59 p.m.). All rates include unlimited free mileage. Rates do not include state or local surcharges, tax, optional coverages, or gas refueling charges. Renter must meet Avis's age, driver, and credit requirements, and return to the same renting location. Make reservations by calling 800-331-1600 or online at http://www.avis.com.
