2009 Mathematical Sciences Employment Center

The 2009 Employment Center served 737 applicants and 112 employers. The number of applicants broke all previous records in the 57 year history of the Employment Center; the number of employers was down slightly from recent years. For the first time, the Employment Center no longer featured the traditional computer-scheduling system which had been in use, in various formats, for about 45 years. All interviews were scheduled at the request of the employers. Printed books of information and a paper message center helped with interview arrangements. Employers also utilized wireless internet in the Employment Center, and a spreadsheet of applicant data. For employers who were already beyond the beginning stages of recruitment, the larger "committee tables" helped to provide a setting for further screening of applicants.

Participants appreciated the efforts of AMS staff, led by Colleen Rose, to guide applicants to the correct tables, and keep things running smoothly.
