Report
on the 5th Joint Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Sociedad Matemática Mexicana Morelia
Michoacán, México, May 23-26, 2001
The 5th
joint meeting of the AMS and SMM was a great success both for the scientific
quality of its program and in reinforcing the ties between the Mexican
and American mathematical communities. The excellent relationships developed
between mathematicians from Mexico and the US during past joint meetings
was further enhanced by the 2001 meeting in Morelia. There were a total
number of 442 participants. In addition to the 6 invited addresses (3
Mexican and 3 from the US), there were 17 special sessions with 313
invited talks (162 Mexican and 152 others, mostly from the US).
The Mexican
hosts did an outstanding job of organizing the meeting and dealing with
local arrangements. Opening ceremonies and the first invited address
were followed by a reception, all of which were held at the Centro Cultural
Universitario de la UMSNH. Registration and the remaining five invited
addresses took place at the Hotel Fiesta Inn, the conference hotel.
Special sessions were held at the Instituto de Matemáticas UNAM.
In addition, there were two cultural events, a purépecha dance
and music show and an organ recital in the cathedral, and two tours,
one of Morelia and one to Pátzcuaro. The meeting closed with
a banquet, complete with mariachis and dancing. Although the various
venues were separated from each other by some distance, the organizers
arranged ample transportation for the participants for all events.
Organizing
committees were as follows: Sponsors
for the meeting included Sociedad Matemática Mexicana, American
Mathematical Society, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de
Hidalgo, Instituto de Física y Matemáticas de la Universidad
Michoacana, Escuela de Ciencias Físico Matemáticas de
la Universidad Michoacana, Instituto de Matemáticas de la UNAM
Coordinación del Campus de la UNAM en Morelia, Coordinación
de la Investigación Científica UNAM, Instituto Michoacano
de Cultura, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, Subsecretaría
de Educación Superior e Investigación Científica
Universidad Latina de América, and Universidad Autónoma
Metropolitana.
It was
agreed that the next joint AMS-SMM meeting should be held somewhere
in the US in 2004.
