2010 Joint International Meeting of the AMS and Sociedad Matemática Mexicana

Bryant talk at the Opening CeremoniesThe Eighth Joint International Meeting of the AMS and Sociedad Matemática Mexicana was held at University of California, Berkeley, June 2-4, 2010. The meeting drew nearly 250 participants. The opening ceremonies took place at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) on the evening of June 2nd. Welcome speeches were given by Carlos Felix Corona, the Mexican Consul General in San Francisco, Eric Friedlander, the AMS President elect, Isidoro Gitler, SMM President, David Eisenbud, the Vice President of the Simons Foundation, Alejandro Adem, the Director of PIMS and Susan Friedlander, as AMS Associate Secretary.

The speeches were followed by a short general audience mathematical lecture, A visit to the Finsler world, given by Robert Bryant, the Director of MSRI (above, left). There was then a reception and buffet dinner hosted by MSRI for everyone at the opening ceremonies. Eric Friedlander, Robert Osserman, and Samuel Gitler have a chance to reunite at the meeting (above, right).

The scientific program, organized by representatives of both societies, included plenary speakers from each society. The invited speakers were:

  • Alejandro Adem (University of British Columbia and PIMS), Homotopy theory and spaces of representations
  • Peter W.-K. Li (University of California, Irvine), What do we know about open manifolds?
  • Ernesto Lupercio (CINVESTAV), Orbifolds and quantum field theories
  • Alberto Verjovsky (IM-UNAM), A smooth codimension-one foliation of the 5-sphere by symplectic leaves
  • Maciej Zworski (University of California Berkeley), Random perturbations in discrete quantization

There were 10 special sessions on the program.

Since the AMS's first joint international meeting with the London Mathematical Society in 1992, the AMS has co-sponsored 26 meetings with sister societies in their host countries, and upcoming are the First International Meeting of the AMS and the Sociedad de Matematica de Chile (December 15-18, 2010 Pucon, Chile) and the International Meeting of the AMS and the South African Mathematical Society (November 29-December 3, 2011 Port Elizabeth, South Africa). International meetings are a valuable addition to the Society's programs that foster contacts and collaborations.
