Search Information

Displayed at the top of the headline list is the criteria that was used for the search with the order of operation. For example:

Publications results for "Author=(graham, r*) AND MSC Primary=(11) AND Reviewer=(grekos)"

This indicates that the database was searched in the Publications tab for any items by author Graham, R* with MSC 11 primary classification that were reviewed by Grekos.

Sort Order

MathSciNet results are in most cases presented in the following order:

  • By reverse order of publication year of the original item
  • Within publication year, by reverse order of the date on which the item was entered into the Mathematical Reviews Database.

The exception to this order occurs when a headline list is obtained by clicking on a journal issue: from a headline list, from a full item, or from a list of journal issues obtained in Search the Journals Database. The resulting headline list displays all items in the MR Database taken from the chosen issue of the given journal, ordered by first page number for journals issued with consecutive paging. As a result, the items appear in table-of-contents order.

Bibliographic Citation(s)

Each headline item displays the following bibliographic information: MR Number, Author Name(s), Title, Journal, Volume, Publication Year, Issue, Paging, Translation Journal and Issue (when applicable), Series and Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC). Some items may be listed as Database Expansion Items.

MR Number
The MR Number is a seven-digit number used to uniquely identify a specific record in the Mathematical Reviews (MR) Database. Every item in the database has a seven-digit accession number, and some items also have an additional identifier, seen in the Full Item view, for compatibility with the paper publication Mathematical Reviews (1940-2012). Click on an MR Number from the headline list to display the Full Item.

Author Name(s)
Names are displayed in the bibliographic information as: lastname, firstname, middlename or initial(s). Click on an author name to retrieve a headline list of all papers by that author.

Example: Novikova, N. M.; Pospelova, I. I.; Semovskaya, A. S.

Title
The original title of an item is given if it is in English, French, or German. If the item is a paper, only a translated title is provided for languages other than English, French, or German. If the item is monographic, the original title (or its transliteration) is given, with an English translation.

Example: Methods for solving multilinear programming problems. (Russian)

Journal
In MathSciNet, full or abbreviated journal names are available for all items from 1980 to the present. Prior to 1980 only journal name abbreviations are included.

Click on a journal name to retrieve bibliographic information about that particular journal, including full name, issues per year, publisher, and ISSN number. In addition, links to lists of indexed items in issues of that particular journal are presented. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about journal names.)

Volume, Publication Year, Issue and Paging
The issue number links to a headline list of indexed items from that issue. If there is no issue number, the year will be a link to the list of indexed items. The publication year can be used as a search criterion on the full search screen.

Example: 40 (2000), no. 10, 1451--1463

Translation Journal and Issue
For those items in foreign-language journals for which there is a cover-to-cover translation, bibliographic information concerning the translation is added when the translation journal issue becomes available. Note that this may be after the MathSciNet item is published and also, for those items with reviews, after the review is published.

Series
For book series, full series titles or abbreviations are available in MathSciNet.

Click on a series name to retrieve information about that particular series, including full name, issues per year, publisher, and ISSN number. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about series names.)

Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)
MSC classes are codes used to classify the mathematical content of items in the Mathematical Reviews Database. The current classification scheme (MSC 2012) is composed of five-character identifiers, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics. (See MathSciNet Field Help for additional information about the MSC.)

Both primary and secondary classifications may be assigned to an item. In that instance, the secondary classification is in parentheses, e.g. 14A22 (16S38). Click on a MSC to retrieve descriptions of all classifications listed. Note: Database Expansion Items will not have a MSC.

Database Expansion Item
Beginning in 2001, items with a new style of treatment have been included in MathSciNet. These items represent an expansion of the scope of coverage by the Mathematical Reviews Database.
Database Expansion items are not classified and do not have reviews. In every other respect they are treated just like all other items in the Mathematical Reviews Database. In particular, the authors are identified and the items have journal linking and original item linking (when available). These items can be identified in the headline list by the text Database Expansion Item, which follows the bibliographic data.
The class of items added since 2001 encompasses journal publications in the areas that might be termed Applied Statistics. The inclusion of these items was in response to many requests from librarians and others for the kind of information that formerly was contained in the CIS subfile of MathSci tape distributions. Beginning in 2003, Database Expansion treatment is being extended to two new classes. It applies to certain items in Computer Science not previously considered to be within the scope of the MR Database. It is also applied to Database items created to provide links from MathSciNet to pre-1940 mathematical research literature as it is made available electronically.  These items are referred to as contributed items; the preferences tab offers an option to suppress them.

Links to Original Documents

From the headline list, there may be links to the original document depending on what is available for that document. Links may be to an original article, a journal homepage, or to the document delivery service.

Article This link is displayed below a headline item. It links directly to the online article at the publisher's or journal's Web site. Access to the full text of an article is dependent on your having a subscription to the journal. In some cases, the abstract for the article is available without a subscription. A current list of journals is available from the MathSciNet Journal Search and Current Journal Issues pages.

Journal This link is displayed below a headline item. This link is active when a link to a journal homepage is available. Access to the full text of an article is dependent on your having a subscription to the journal. In some cases, the abstract for the article is available without a subscription.

Retrieving Citations

Citations for MathSciNet items can be viewed/downloaded in EndNote, AMSRefs, BibTeX and ASCII formats.

You may choose to view or download citations for up to 50 item. This can be done by selecting Citations (ASCII), Citations (BibTeX), Citations (AMSRefs), or Citations (EndNote) from the pull-down menu located next to Batch download: and then clicking on Retrieve First 50. If there are fewer than 50 items in the list, all of them will be displayed.

Alternatively, you may  mark up to 50 individual items and then retrieve them. Click in the boxes to the left of all items you want to view/download and then click the Retrieve Marked button.

Once you have the list of citations displayed in the desired format, use the File | Save As function in your browser to download the file. Another option for downloading multiple citations is to use the clipboard feature.

Retrieving Full Item(s)

The MathSciNet database provides many options for viewing full items. Full items can be displayed individually and in groups. They can also be viewed in various formats.

Displaying Full Items Individually
Full items can be viewed in HTML, PDF, PostScript and DVI formats. Viewers are required for all formats except HTML.

To view a full item in HTML format, click on the MR identifier for the item to be displayed. Viewing a full item in HTML format will provide you with active links to other data.

To view a full item in PDF format, click on the PDF link located below the bibliographic information for the item. The full item is displayed in Adobe's PDF format and links to additional data are available.

Full items are also available in PDF, PostScript and DVI formats. Click in the checkbox to the left of the item you want to view. From the pull down menu just above the first headline, select the desired format. Click on the Retrieve Marked button.

Displaying Full Items in Groups

You may view or download up to 50 full items for the entire result set. This can be done by selecting a document format from the pull down menu located next to Batch downloads: and then clicking Retrieve First 50. If there are fewer than 50 items in the list, all of them will be displayed. The default format is HTML.  Alternatively, you may  mark up to 50 individual items and then retrieve them. Click in the boxes to the left of all items you want to view/download and then click the Retrieve Marked button.
