"Math Puzzlers Here for Prime Time," by Bill Dietrich. Seattle Times, 14 August 1996.
This article reports on a symposium held in Seattle in August 1996 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the proof of the Prime Number Theorem. The theorem was proved independently by the French mathematicians Hadamard and de la Vallee Poussin. They were following a plan mapped out by the legendary German mathematician Riemann, who also set forth a conjecture, now known as the Riemann Hypothesis, which is connected to questions about the distribution of prime numbers among the integers. The article discusses present-day efforts to prove the Riemann Hypothesis and discusses the seemingly mysterious connection of abstract mathematics to practical applications.
