"Unconventional Mathematician is Making Brain Waves," by Douglas Martin. Education Life, New York Times supplement, 31 March 1996, page 7.

This short piece is a profile of University of Michigan mathematician Fred L. Bookstein, who has developed statistical theory of shape, dubbed "morphometrics." This theory is being used to identify differences in the shapes of the brains of schizophrenics. It may also have applications to earthquake and weather prediction, diagnosing fetal alcohol syndrome, and improving golf swings.
