"Leaves by number," by Christopher Surridge. Nature, 20 November 2003.

Surridge gives an overview and illustration of how Fibonacci numbers appear in plants and summarizes the article by Didler Reinhardt et al ("Regulation of phyllotaxis by polar auxin transport," published in the same issue). The researchers present the role the plant hormone auxin plays in phyllotaxis (the positioning of leaves around a stem), the "mechanism by which Fibonacci numbers can emerge."
