"Particle Physics Braces for the Next Big Thing," by James Glanz. New York Times, 21 November 2000.
Construction is under way for two new tools to help particle physicists fill in the gaps of the Standard Model of atomic structure. The building of the Large Hadron Collider and Atlas particle detector in Europe, and the renovation of the Tevatron accelerator in the US, will help physicists detect the smallest building blocks of matter. In particular, physicists hope to see evidence of the elusive Higgs field, thought to give molecules their mass.
