"Life is a Game of Numbers," by Marina Chicurel. Nature, 21/28 December 2000.
Mathematical modeling continues to impact biological research. In the past year, mathematics has aided research on bacterial and cellular response, as well as genetic engineering. Two new institutes for mathematical biology, the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle and the Molecular Sciences Institute in Berkeley, promise to continue the trend. A US$25 million grant for University of Texas' Alliance for Cellular Signaling won't hurt, either.
