"May the Best Man Lose," by Dana Mackenzie. Discover, November 2000, pages 85-91.

Is the US system of choosing presidential candidates and electing a president the fairest system? Mathematicians who have studied voting schemes say it's not. This article discusses some alternative voting schemes, such as approval voting or the Borda count, that insure that more voters are satisfied with an election's outcome than is the case with our with our current scheme. The theories are illustrated by examinations of actual elections.
