"A Greene Universe," by Alden M. Hayashi. Scientific American, April 2000, pages 22-23.

This article presents a profile of Brian Greene, a mathematical physicist at Columbia University. Greene's best-selling book about string theory, The Elegant Universe, made him one of the best known scientists today and led to his appearenace on a number of television programs. The article describes some of Greene's work in string theory, including an important result about how the fabric of space can "tear" and then repair itself, and also provides a sense of what motivates Greene as a scientist.
