"Class Talk", by Colin Hannaford. New Scientist, 28 August 1999, pages 46-47.
In this opinion article, Colin Hannaford argues that an understanding of mathematics is vital to democratic society. It's not just that people need to understand mathematics to be able to make sense of our increasingly technological world. It's also that understanding of mathematics helps people to express themselves clearly and logically, making them better able to contribute positively to society. "Taught sensitively and thoughtfully, and mainly through dialogue, as the ancient Greeks intended, [mathematics] can help unify societies," writes Hannaford.
